Vettel said the initiative was his idea and he wanted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the car winning both the championship and the British Grand Prix.

He bought the FW14B 08 chassis, which was sold by auction house Bonhams at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, for £2.7million including buyer’s premium.

Chassis 08 was used for 13 of the 16 World Championship races in 1992 and took a remarkable seven pole positions.

Vettel said: “It was my idea, it’s my car, I bought the car a few years ago – I think four years ago – because the red five is the car from 92 with the five red on it, and that means a little more than the car from 30 years ago.

“Obviously I have the number five on my car, I won my first championship with the red five, although it was a bit smaller on our car at the time, but it was still the number five. I wore number five in karting, and I have number five now, so there is a connection there.

“I think the early 90s is the first memory I have of Formula 1, of this car and the years that followed. It was my idea, my initiative, and I thought exactly 30 years after that she won the championship, but she also won the British Grand Prix 30 years ago, that’s a great idea.

“But I also thought we had to do it responsibly, so I’m using carbon neutral fuels on Sunday to demonstrate that we can still keep our history, our heritage and our culture in motorsport, but do it in a more responsible.

“So I’m really looking forward to driving the car for the first time and hearing the car, I think a lot of people will share that joy with me.”
