Update: July 4, 5:30 PM EST – Report from Italy says Bayern are ready to offer a substantial, incentivizing offer for De Ligt
According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea FC offer Juventus a solid base package for Matthijs de Ligt, but Bayern Munich are ready to raise the bar with an opportunity to earn more money via bonuses:
Bidding for De Ligt is open. There’s also Bayern on the player, with an initial offer that doesn’t match Juve’s demand but almost matches that of Chelsea, who are meanwhile preparing a raise. The Blues have put 70 million plus 10 million in bonuses on the table: still too little for the Bianconeri, who had already rejected a less financially viable offer for the inclusion of a technical counterpart and are trying to hold the wall over the Clause of 120 million.
The Germans offer a little less in the fixed part, but would be ready to recognize more substantial bonuses, to the point of being able to fight a duel on equal terms with the Londoners.
It looks like Bayern Munich are, indeed, very serious about this pursuit.

Update: July 4, 5:00 PM EST – kicker says Bayern have advantage in De Ligt race, Pavard likely to leave if deal goes ahead
According to the kicker, Bayern Munich have an advantage over Chelsea FC in the race for Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt (captured by @iMiaSanMia):
Matthijs de Ligt is interested in a move to Bayern, and the interest is mutual. Bayern have an advantage over Chelsea as they have always maintained contact with de Ligt. Moreover, he would reunite with his former teammates Mazraoui & Gravenberch, represented by the same agency. De Ligt has a €120m release clause but Juventus are reportedly ready to sell for around €80m. This fee represents a big hurdle for Bayern, who could use Juventus’ interest in Benjamin Pavard as a solution to include him in a potential deal.
Additionally, the kicker says Pavard will likely leave if Bayern Munich reach a deal for De Ligt (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):
Pavard actually wanted to establish himself as a defensive leader at Bayern. But the potential signing of de Ligt would affect the Frenchman’s sporting outlook and make him rethink his desire to stay.

Update: July 4, 3:00 PM EST – Chelsea still ahead of Bayern in race for De Ligt
According to Italian journalist Romeo Agresti, Chelsea FC are still ahead of Bayern Munich in the race for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt:
It’s possible that this is due to the player’s massive transfer fee.
Huge news has just fallen out of the blue. According to Florian Plettenberg, the same journalist who broke Sadio Mane’s transfer, Bayern Munich are in negotiations with Juventus for the transfer of Matthijs de Ligt. The 22-year-old Dutchman has apparently impressed both Brazzo and Nagelsmann, who could see him as a replacement for the recently deceased Niklas Sule.
Here is Plettenberg’s exclusive report, graciously tweeted in English for the sake of international fans like us:
De Ligt exclusive news: Bayern want him & #deLigt wants to join Bayern! The interviews with Nagelsmann & Salihamidzic impressed him! Negotiations between Bayern and Juve have started. Discussions are good. But: It is very expensive. Transfer fee expected between 60-80 million euros. @SkySports @Sky_Marc

According to Plettenberg’s report, we have the following bombs:
- De Ligt only wants to join Bayern despite interest from Chelsea and other European clubs. The Dutch will certainly be expensive.
- Benjamin Pavard is a prime candidate to leave Bayern Munich this summer, with Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus all interested. Could a swap deal + cash for de Ligt be considered? After signing Mazraoui, Bayern can afford to sell Pavard if they sign a new centre-back.
De Ligt is one of three signings Brazzo are keen to complete before the end of the summer, the other two being Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig and Mathys Tel from Stade Rennes. This news is still in its infancy, but we’ll keep you posted on all new developments as they come out. This summer is shaping up to be the biggest Bayern have had in a very long time.
