In the crash, which caused the race to be stopped, the gearbox broke in the back of his Haas car after it hit the barrier in the middle of the pool complex and then slid into the barrier Tecpro at the exit.

Schumacher lost the use of the gearbox which was torn from the car in the crash, while his chassis is currently being repaired at the Haas factory, but his Ferrari power unit is still usable.

At the time, the German was mystified as to why he lost control so suddenly in the high-speed section of the track, while his engineer suggested over the radio that he might have hit the barrier just before, and thus break something.

However, after reviewing the data, Schumacher now admits that he simply went wide at Tabac and cooled his tires right in a wet area, then hit another seconds later at the pool as he raced at barely 10 cm wider than before.

“Basically I mean the whole track was quite wet in places,” he said when asked by what the data revealed.

“And others were quite dry. We went a bit wide in turn 12 [Tabac] which cooled the right side. And then going through the chicane, I was actually calm for the circumstances, for the conditions, that there were.

“And I just misplaced it a bit, and I was basically 10 centimeters on the wet area, which then triggers double wheel spin in this case, because we have so much power. And that kind of thing then just threw the car in a U-turn, I’m trying to fix it, and it hits the wall.”

Schumacher insisted he had no advance warning that he might lose the car in such a way.

“No, it came out of nowhere,” he said. “And I’ve talked to other people. And, you know, most of the comments I got said it looked really weird. So obviously we can’t check to see if anything is wrong. It’s broken, actually. But the data suggests not, so it just looks like a wetland.

“It was really strange, because the accident itself was not difficult at all. Splitting it in half again is quite unfortunate, because there is obviously a lot of damage in this case.”

Monaco’s crash came just weeks after Schumacher suffered a huge crash during qualifying for the Saudi Arabian GP which caused him to miss the race.

He explained that he had to take risks to get the results the car is capable of and admitted that he had to learn to balance the two.

“Especially in midfield this year, it’s so tight, so it’s just a matter of being 10 centimeters out of place, and things go very wrong. I mean, nobody thought about the pavement at the prior to Jeddah for example, it is a trigger for these In Monaco, the conditions were obviously quite difficult.

“So yeah, obviously there’s the risk and reward assessment. And obviously we’re trying to be in the points, and so we have to take some sort of risk. But yeah, that’s definitely something where I just gotta learn a little more, and understand a little more.

“I guess as a driver you always try to take risks and take advantage of them. I mean the midfield is so tight that if you really don’t take the risk you end up anyway P15 or less. And that’s not where we want to be, we want to be in the top 10.

“So you have to take some risk. And it’s up to me to decide and find the right margin.

“But there are other circumstances that also play into that. So it’s just a matter of dialing that in.”

Schumacher also hinted that he would be less in the spotlight if he had already scored in 2022.

“We’ve had times before where we’ve had really good races, but we haven’t been rewarded for that. And if I had, let’s say be rewarded for that, I think we’d have a conversation a bit different right now about these things. So it’s only a matter of time, really.”
