Matheus Nunes is the latest midfielder to be linked with a move to Manchester United, while Liverpool have realized their chances of signing Gavi are dwindling – all in Monday’s Euro transfer gossip.
MAN UTD ENTERS THE RACE FOR MATHEUS NUNES
Manchester United are ready to compete with neighbors Man City for the signing of Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes.
It depends portuguese source Correio de Manha, who claim a deal could be completed for €50m (£42.7m) plus a player on loan. The identity of a potential counterpoise is not revealed.
Nunes has been linked with Man City in recent weeks. He has a major fan in the form of Pep Guardiola. However, Manchester United are now ready to provide competition in the battle for the services of the Portuguese star.
With Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard leaving their midfield this summer, reinforcements are needed. It will be important to find the right balance with existing players like Fred and Scott McTominay.
Nunes largely plays as a central midfielder but can sit out if needed. Therefore, he would replace Pogba more in terms of the specific position.
United could sign him by activating a €60m (£51.3m) release clause. However, Sporting are ready to accept slightly lower offers for a player under contract until 2026.
Man City still have a chance for Matheus Nunes
However, there is still a good chance that such an offer will come from City instead, who have just made a deal with Sporting over the future of Pedro Porro.
However, United have already negotiated with the Lisbon-based side. Therefore, Nunes could follow in the footsteps of Bruno Fernandes.
At 23, United believes in his potential. They could move after his commitments with Portugal at the end of the UEFA Nations League on June 12.
Nunes, who was born in Brazil, registered four goals and five assists in 50 appearances in the 2021-22 season. The next few months will tell if it was his last with Sporting or not.
