David also praised Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate for changing the perception around the team after years of poor form.

He said: “I think for our team this is a huge opportunity. We have never used [tiredness] as an excuse, but to be honest, we’ve come to the end of a grueling season in the Premiership, the toughest league in the world, and you’re tired, you want to rest and you don’t have time to recover of a difficult season.

“But these players come into this tournament when they are at their peak. They have rested, they are in the middle of their season, there is no reason and no excuse not to be in peak physical condition.

“For our team, this is a real opportunity. We have a young and exciting team, a manager who has been with these players for a long time and I really enjoy watching this England team play.

“They are exciting, they play with passion, as if they want to be there. As an England fan this is what you want to see.
