We start the third round on day 5 of Wimbledon. On Friday, we’ll see eight women’s matches to determine who advances to Round 4. As always, the LWOT writers share their thoughts on the matches. We’ve split the eight matches between this article and a separate article. Predictions for today’s matches are Jakub Bobro, Glenys Furness and Jim Smith. Who do you think will win?

Wimbledon Day 5 Predictions Women

Angelique Kerber versus Elise Mertens

Jakub:
Kerber has been a strong contender here, earning straight-set wins over Kristina Mladenovic and Magda Linette. Mertens had to fight back, losing a set to both Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (who gave up in the third set) and Panna Udvardy. If the German keeps her form, Mertens didn’t seem like a player capable of stopping her here.
Prediction: Kerber in 2

Glenys:
An insertion match. Both seeded, but only one of them reached the final. Kerber won the singles event in 2018. The German also had fairly straightforward matches to reach this stage. Mertens, on the other hand, never made it past the fourth round. The Belgian had to fight every game to get to this stage, and they all went the distance. Kerber will take care of that.
Prediction: Kerber in 2

Jim:
Mertens was close to an early exit at the hands of Panna Udvardy, but was saved by a combination of her own never-saying attitude and the failing light. However, Kerber probably won’t be so forgiving. The German has an excellent record at Wimbledon and her talent on grass should give her a decisive advantage here.
Prediction: Kerber in 2

Kaja Juvan vs. Heather Watson

Jakub:
Juvan knocked out the fittest turf player in Beatriz Haddad Maia, followed by a win over Dalma Galfi. Watson will be a different challenge as she will have the crowd behind her which may well decide this game.
Prediction: Watson in 3

Glenys:
Kaja Juvan impressed in the first round, beating 23rd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets. Although her second round match was a bit easier for the Slovenian, Juvan never made it past the third round. Heather Watson had to play her first two matches over two days, due to late arrivals. Watson is also a Grand Slam champion, but in mixed doubles. The Briton will have the crowd behind her and will also be on a show court. Watson has experience playing on show courts, having had his first-round match on Court 1, and this match will be the same. The Briton held match points against Serena Williams in 2015 at center before ultimately losing that third-round match. This one should be easier for the Brit.
Prediction: Watson in 3

Jim:
Juvan is having the best season of her career and the Slovenian will surely have high hopes of reaching week two of a Major for the first time in her career after excellent wins over Beatriz Haddad Maia and Dalma Galfi. Will she? Watson has the quality to win this game and will have the crowd right behind her, but the Briton isn’t quite the force she once was, even at home.
Prediction: Juvan in 3

Alison Riske vs. Marie Bouzkova

Jakub:
The women’s game of the day for me. Riske-Amritraj continues to show why she has been a dangerous turf player during her career, most recently beating tough qualifier Maja Chwalinska. Bouzkova pulled off a big upset against Danielle Collins and followed it up losing just three games to Ann Li. Can Bouzkova’s tireless defense beat Riske’s offense? I believe it is possible.
Prediction: Bouzkova in 3

Glenys:
Alison Riske looks sharp right now. The American, although losing the first set in her second round match, dominated the remaining sets losing just one match. His first-round match was a straight-sets win. Riske is a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist. Marie Bouzkova knocked out the seventh seed in her first round in three sets, then blitzed in the second round, losing just 3 matches. The Czech will face her third consecutive American at the Championship this year, however, Riske will be a little too far.
Prediction: Riske in 3

Jim:
Riske arrived at Wimbledon after a disappointing streak of form but the American has a good record in SW19 and has impressed so far this week. She got off to a slow start against Maja Chwalinska though and will have to avoid that against Bouzkova. The Czech plays good tennis and is good enough to really challenge Riske here. But expect Riske’s experience to ultimately work in his favor.
Prediction: Riske in 3

Maria Sakkari vs Tatjana Maria

Jakub:
Sakkari picked up two solid straight-set wins over Zoe Hives and Viktoriya Tomova. Veteran Tatjana Maria is tough on grass with her style of play as she showed when she upset Sorana Cirstea in the second round. The German will bring a different challenge to Sakkari but the Greek’s baseline game should be strong enough to win here.
Prediction: Sakkari in 3

Glenys:
Maria Sakkari calmed down in her first two rounds, hardly troubled by her opponents. Although ranked fifth this year, the Greek has never made it past the third round here. Against the German Tatjana Maria, the Greek should have little trouble. Although Maria defeated 26th seed Sorana Cîrstea in the final round, the German’s two matches so far have come in three sets.
Prediction: Sakkari in 2

Jim:
Maria is in the relatively rare position of being, more or less, a grass pitch specialist and has so far looked at home on the lawns of the All-England Club in three-set wins over Astra Sharma and Sorana Cirstea. Sakkari, on the other hand, has always struggled at Wimbledon. But the Greek has looked sharp so far this year and is the best player in this pair. This should be reflected in the score.
Prediction: Sakkari in 3
