Wimbledon 2022 final clashes are officially set. No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic takes on Nick Kyrgios in Sunday’s men’s final while No. 17 seed Elena Rybakina beat Ons Jabeur in Saturday’s women’s final to win her first Grand Championship. Slam.
On the men’s side, Djokovic is aiming for his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title. He and Kyrgios have met on two other occasions, and Kyrgios has beaten the Serb twice in straight sets. Djokovic, the world No. 3, has the advantage of experience as this is his 32nd Grand Slam final, while it will be the first for Kyrgios.
The unseeded Kyrgios reached the final by taking an upset after their opponent, Rafael Nadal, withdrawn from the semi-finals due to an abdominal injury. Djokovic qualified for the final by knocking out No.9 seed Cameron Norrie 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, his second win in a row.
Rybakina’s victory made her the first woman representing Kazakhstan to win a major tournament. She was born in Russia – and still lives in Moscow – but moved her tennis representation to Kazakhstan in 2018 when the national tennis federation offered her more support than she had found in her home country. Jabeur, meanwhile, was the first Arab woman and player of African descent to reach a Grand Slam final.
Women’s No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek saw her winning streak come to an end with a third-round loss to Alizé Cornet. The world No. 1 has won 37 consecutive matches and the six previous tournaments she has appeared in, including victories in Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome and the French Open at Roland Garros. Cornet’s victory put her in the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time since 2014.
Serena Williams took to court for the first time since the 2021 edition of Wimbledon on June 28. She hadn’t played since last June, when she suffered a hamstring injury in her first-round match at the All England Club. Williams’ match against Harmony Tan was close, but Tan emerged 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) after three hours and 11 minutes on the court. Williams had to retire in the first round at the All England Club last year – her only first-round exit before this year – but this is the first time she has lost a first-round match at Wimbledon and only the second once she was beaten on the court in the first round of a Grand Slam (French Open 2012).
Other Wimbledon headlines include Marin Cilic, not a favorite but certainly a strong dark horse, retiring from competition aftertest positive for COVID-19. 8 seed Matteo Berrettini, Wimbledon 2021 runner-up, has also withdrawn due to a positive test result.
No player of Russian or Belarusian nationality is allowed to participate in the tournament. Wimbledon made this decision in April after Russia invaded Ukraine. As a result of the ban, some of the sport’s best players will be absent from Wimbledon, including men’s world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and women’s world No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka.
