In his latest Sky Sports column, Paul Merson gives his verdict on Chelsea’s potential signing of Cristiano Ronaldo and Stamford Bridge’s impact on Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling.

‘Ronaldo ticks a box for Chelsea’

I think he might be tempted to leave like it’s happening – like it’s happening right now. We hear that he wants to play in the Champions League, so I think it could happen. I think it will be a win-win situation if he goes. I think it needs to be sorted out as soon as possible – the season is in four or five weeks.

Broadcaster and journalist Flo Lloyd-Hughes discusses today’s biggest stories, including Cristiano Ronaldo topping Todd Boehly’s Chelsea wishlist.

It’s a bit disappointing the way you hear the news that he wants to play in the Champions League. It is clear that Man Utd will not be in the Champions League for a long time. I don’t know why it wasn’t nipped in the bud at first. It must have dragged on for so long. I would be a bit disappointed if I was a Man Utd fan.

It is difficult to have centre-forwards capable of scoring goals, especially in the best and most difficult league in the world. So if Ronaldo has moved on, Man Utd don’t really have a replacement to take his place as a proven goalscorer who will net you 15-20 goals. So they had to go looking for someone.

‘Man City will miss Sterling dearly’

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has made Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling his top transfer priority this summer.

I think Sterling would be a great recruit. I would worry about Man City selling Sterling because you sell a lot of goals. People always come up to me, ‘He’s always in second place to exploit them’. He does not push anyone to exploit these objectives. There is an art to what he does and he will be greatly missed by Man City next season if he leaves.

I think if Chelsea were going to get him I think it would be a major signing, especially when you get a top quality international footballer who is part of one of the best teams in the world.

‘Top drawer’ Eriksen what Man Utd need

Dharmesh Sheth says Christian Eriksen has agreed in principle to join Manchester United.

One hundred percent, Christian Eriksen is the player Man Utd are clamoring for. He is a quality player, a sniper. He sprays the ball on the pitch, makes things happen. That’s what they need. A lot of teams come to Old Trafford and there’s no more fear factor, so the game will open up and it can break people down. I’m a huge Eriksen fan, I’m surprised every club in the country isn’t after him. I mean it would be a massive blow for Man Utd.

Jesus a ‘massive coup’ for Arsenal

I thought it was a great signing, I really did. I think Gabriel Jesus is a good player. He misses chances, but I like players who position themselves to miss chances. He’s not hiding, you know he’s a centre-forward. He likes to score goals and I think they needed someone like Jesus. Arsenal only had Eddie Nketiah – you need more than a centre-forward, and I think Jesus ticks the boxes. I think it’s a major blow for Arsenal.

‘Not too many excuses for Arsenal this season’

They look good. I saw Edu on Sunday and we had a little chat and I think they bought well. They’re trying to bring in a few more players and yes, I think they could have a good season, Arsenal. I think you try to get into the top four and then you know the baby steps. But I think the top four would definitely be the goal this season. I think they bought well. They have young players in the squad who have another season under their belt, so I don’t think there are too many excuses at Arsenal now that there is a good little team there.

I can not tell [which targets Edu was talking to me about]. He spoke to me in confidence. We were at Elton John’s!
